There’s something so incredibly special about photographing a family right before they grow by one tiny human.
This sweet family of three is getting ready to become a family of four, and we had the perfect Canby maternity photography session to celebrate this exciting season of their lives.
Maternity sessions aren’t just about documenting a growing belly. They’re about capturing the little moments between everyone—the way your little one looks at Mom, Dad’s hand resting on her belly, the laughs, the cuddles, and all those little interactions that you’ll want to remember long after your newest baby arrives.
As an Oregon City maternity photographer, I love photographing maternity sessions throughout the area, including Canby, Oregon City, Wilsonville, Portland, and the surrounding Willamette Valley. Canby is especially beautiful for family and maternity photography because there are so many options for natural, relaxed outdoor portraits.
What Should Everyone Wear for a Maternity Session?
One of the questions I get all the time is, “What should we wear?”
My biggest piece of advice?
Start with Mom. 💕
For maternity sessions, I recommend choosing Mom’s dress first and then planning everyone else’s outfits around it. Mom is the star of the session, and once you have her outfit picked, it becomes much easier to coordinate colors and textures for everyone else.
A few things to keep in mind:
Choose coordinating colors instead of matching outfits. Creams, soft neutrals, earth tones, muted blues, greens, and warm browns photograph beautifully together.
Think about texture. Linen, knits, lace, denim, and subtle patterns can add interest without distracting from the family.
Avoid everyone wearing the exact same color. Coordinating looks tend to feel more natural and timeless.
Consider movement. Long, flowing dresses and skirts photograph beautifully outdoors and create gorgeous movement when you walk or spin.
Keep comfort in mind. Especially for little ones! If they're comfortable, they're much more likely to have fun during the session.
And Mom doesn't have to buy a new dress!

Planning Your Family's Maternity Session
With an older sibling involved, maternity sessions can be a little unpredictable—and that's completely okay!
I don't expect your toddler or little one to sit perfectly and smile for every photograph. Some of my favorite images come from the in-between moments: running, snuggling, exploring, laughing, and being silly together.
We'll get the beautiful posed family portraits, but we'll also give your family space to simply be together.
That's what makes your photographs feel like your family instead of a collection of perfectly posed pictures.
And before you know it, that little belly will be a brand-new baby in your arms.
